Another run in with the general public

Me and my crew were training today, The kid, Cory and one of my morning girls Katie (pictured here through many super cool, Instagram filters). We were rolling along all having a good session when I noticed a few guys coming in the front door that I didn’t recognize. They didn’t look like there were there to lift, as a matter of fact they didn’t look like they had ever lifted so since Katie’s job, first and foremost, is to separate me from the the outside world while I’m training I made her go check it out. I kind of saw her talking to these three well dressed guys, two tall gooney ones and some short little fella, but I wasn’t really paying too much attention because Don and I were doing some heavy high-pulls and I wanted to keep moving fast. Soon they were roaming around the gym looking at things and would stop every so often to talk to Katie again and then finally they left.

After they left she came back over to us and I can see she was just kind of shaking her head. I said “oh Jesus here it comes, what did those fuck heads want?” Again, notice how I scale the heights of customer service. She said they own a gym in the posh part of Philly (I didn’t even know there was a posh part to Philly) and that they had heard great things about Iron Sport and all the great work we’ve been doing. Which I know is a fucking lie because nobody in their world could have possibly ever even heard of Iron Sport, and I’m not sure what great work he could have been talking about. He went on to say “wow, you guys have kettlebells, the clients that we have are too intimidated by kettlebells so we had to get rid of them.” And then he saw me and my guys doing high-pulls and he asked why we were lifting so heavy and how dangerous that is. She tried to explain to them that’s what we do down here, we are a strength building gym and if you want to be strong you have to lift heavy weights. She said she could see the look of utter confusion on his face. And he said, “but you are such a nice looking young lady, how could it be that you lift such heavy weights and still look like that?” I guess he has only seem chicks do the elliptical machine at his gym and wasn’t used to seeing them do axle clean and jerks. Once again she came back with, “As a matter of fact I just competed in and won my first strongwoman contest and earlier this year ran a half marathon, another one of our employees just won the strongwoman nationals, Steve and many of the guys here are all strongmen and lifting champions. This is what we do here, we train to get strong, compete and usually win!” His genius reply to that was, “But none of you do any cardio?” By now she was just getting annoyed at this uninformed prick. Here was a guy, who owned a gym, coming into another man’s gym and pointing a finger at the owner, who he knows nothing about and basically saying everything he was doing in his training was wrong because he didn’t understand what he was seeing.

Her and I both agreed, after the fact, that it was a good thing that I wasn’t directly involved in her interaction with these guys because she was afraid of what I would have said or done to them. She now knows why I strive to interact with the general population as little as I can. I guess I’m kind of both lucky and spoiled because the only gyms that I have set foot in for the past ten years is mine and The EFS compound. If I had to deal with mentality like this guys every time I tried to workout I would go out of my mind.
