USAPL PA STATES
USAPL PA States
PA states was yesterday. My thoughts about doing this meet were weight driven. Not the actual lifts but body weight. Since I made it down to 231 March 2nd for the ARNOLD I thought it would be a great opportunity to hit a meet within a month and walk into the meet sub 242. This gave me one down week, two heavy weeks and then one deload week heading into this meet. My first week back into the meet was a doosy. Everything felt awful, But on the bright side my back which gave me fits prior to the ARNOLD was feeling solid. Knowing it would be rough I decided to do the meet and plan on taking a shot at the AMERICAN record total. I hoped that even though I would be beat up from the ARNOLD that not cutting would balance things out. 3 Days out from the meet I was eating everything I wanted and my weight was at 243. I dropped flour type carbs, upped my water intake and meet morning my weight was 238. I ate some toast, a banana, drank 32 ounces of water and made the 3 and a half hour drive down up Clark summit PA for the meet. I weighed in and was 238.26. I was shocked that I was that light but felt proud of myself for staying in shape a month after the ARNOLD. After Nationals I let myself get back in the 250ís fast and this wasnít the case. A small feat obviously but it still felt good. So I began my warm up and things felt great. I was loose and limber. I had sights on some 5lb PRs to get 1700 plus then a 15LB PR on the dead for a new record at 1741.. I flew this meet solo. All my guys were busy and couldnít make it plus my wife was at home with the kid. I had my parents with me which was great. I was able to get a depth call and a lift off from some great guys so I thought I was set.
I opened light at 518 and this felt heavy. I shrugged it off and went to my planned second attempt. 578 went up but was very slow. I needed 606 to put me in contention for the record and I knew that wasnít going to fly. I went 590 instead and missed half way.

The bench warm ups felt the same as the squat. Loose and fast. Unlike the squat my opener was a joke. I felt confident that I would best my current American record of 462 without problem. I was hoping for 468. I went t 451 for a second and this was a grinder. I quickly changed my mind on a new bench record and decided I needed to save energy for a solid pull. I waived my third bench and tried to stay positive for a PR deadlift. In all honesty I would have missed 452 today.

So my squat and bench weights were less then I hoped but not too far off. I was off 28 on the squat and only 15 for the bench so I was down but not out. I thought that my 644 pull at the ARNOLD had room to spare and without any cutting for this meet I could go 650 then if all went well 665-670 on a third. I opened at 570 and I it felt slow. My first deadlift always feels like shit so I wasnít fazed. I called for 651. I went up and tugged and after about 4-5 inches the bar stopped moving. I waived my third as I knew it was not going to be any different.

So after the meet I learned a few things. I still canít do 2 meets in one month. I tried this in 2006 after I totaled 2605 for a new World record in the 275 class. I squatted 1050, benched 840, and pulled 715. I did a meet 4 weeks later and only went 3 for 9 with a lot of misses. I also learned that if I try I can stay in the 242 weight class and not have to starve myself. It just takes a little self control. I think I am going to tinker with sumo. At this body weight the deadlift is just not clicking for me. I have pulled 740,745,750,755,750 and multiple other low 700 pulls raw in multiple meets at the 275 class. Now that Iím 242 I canít figure out my technique. The Eleiko bars donít help either LOL. I may try sumo for a meet cycle and give it a go. Iíll try anything at this point. My next meet will most likely be between July and September. Iím going to take a few weeks to rest up and heal. I had a 20 piece chicken nugget today and it was awesome!!!!
